Lady Diplomat

“When a diplomat says yes, he means ‘perhaps”

When he says perhaps, he means ‘no’;

When he says no his not a diplomat.

When a lady says no, she means ‘perhaps”;

When she says perhaps, she means ‘yes”

When she says yes, she is not a lady.”-Voltaire

Voltaire said this a couple of centuries ago and I’m very glad I was not alive then. What about lady diplomats? What about demure men (I don’t think those two words have ever been combined…)? While I understand the point of this quotation and the era it was written it, I don’t understand how people still talk like this. All these rules about how ladies should be mysterious and aloof and not show that they want something are infuriating. Well ladies can want things. Boys, careers, shoes, a new house, to make their own rules. People can invite them places and they can accept. Really. The world won’t collapse and swallow itself.

The diplomat stuff though, is still very accurate. But ladies, we can say yes. And we have every right to.
